カナダのオンタリオ州にロンドンという小さな町があり、そこでLondon is burning というふざけたタイトルのイヴェントを行っていたshiu がいきなりメールをよこして国費でマヘルをカナダに呼んでくれようとしたのはもう2年くらい前のことになる。そのときはシアトルまでは行ったがカナダには行けなかった。It is already around three years since I received a mail out of the blue from Shiu asking us to come to a gallery in a small town called London, in the Ontario region of Canada, and attend an event with the tongue-in-cheek title “London is Burning”. At the time we made it as far as Seattle, but not to Canada.

その後またメールが来て、新潟の亀田市で小中学校の英語教師の職を得たからこんど東京でビールを奢る、とあった。それでぼくらがカナダに行くかわりに、彼が六本木や小金井のライブのときに来ては、一緒に演奏するようになった。Subsequently I received communication to the effect that he had gotten a job as an elementary and junior-high school teacher in Kameda, Niigata, and would like to buy me a beer in Tokyo. And so, instead of us going to Canada, he would come to attend performances in Roppongi and Koganei where we first played together.

彼の適応力はなかなかのもので、いつも楽譜なしで合わせて吹いていた。 渋谷で「世界一遅いロックンロール」などという曲を演奏したときも彼はいた。 そのころのマヘルは2，3人でこっそりやっていたが、そういうときもかならずかれがいた。Shiu was in tow when we performed songs such as “The Fastest (Slowest) Rock'n Roll in the World” in Shibuya’s Uplink Factory and last spring at Artland for songs like “Unify my Heart” and “Kaki/Persimmon”. At the time, Maher where playing as a stealthy 2/3 person unit and Shiu was necessarily a presence.His adaptability was impressive and he played along on pianica without any reference to a musical score.

松山でもやった。宇和島の小石レコードはすき鍋でかれと独占契約を結ぼうとしたが如才ない大手イグルー に阻まれ、ただイグルー の 「london has let me down」に収められた「尚子さんへ」 にその痕跡が見えるだけである。が、それでも松山宇和島には２回来て高校生たちにかれの歌のやり方を聞かせてかれらのいく人かに励みを与えた。We did Matsuyama. Uwajima’s Koishi Records attempted to sign a world-exclusive deal with him but their efforts were hampered by the intervention of Big Steel “Igloo Records”. On the ‘London has Let Me Down’ CD-R which they issued, the only remnant from then is his “Song for Naoko”. He did however come to Matsuyama and Uwajima on two occasions to explain his compositional methods and offer encouragement to some of high school students in attendance.

去年の11月の地震の直後に、ワゴン車で松本を回って裏日本に出る「はこの七人」というツアーをしたときは新潟に呼んでくれた。movietoneのために川手直人が買ったそのワゴン車は関越で壊れて廃車になってしまったのだったが、新潟で彼のソロを聴いて実は彼が天才だったことに初めて気付いたのは嬉しい収穫だった。新潟は路地のラビリンスもべガーズバンケット直系のその店も地元紙の書評欄がみんな間さんみたいな文体なのもみなよかった。Then, in November of last year, right after the earthquake, and while we were travelling around Matsumoto in a van on our “Seven in a Van” Tour, we received an invitation from Shiu to play in Niigata. That van, which Naoto Kawate had bought for Movietone, broke down and had to be abandoned on the Kanetsu Expressway but the happy revelation in Niigata, hearing Shiu perform solo for the first time, that he was a genius, was ample compensation.

かれはエレキギターで、2，3本の弦だけを使って爪弾きながらしずかに歌う。 ドレミファソラシド/ドシラソファミレドというだけの伴奏で歌う秀逸な曲もあった。ドラッグシティによくいるような人々よりもいいと思った。かれにとっては外国語であるマンダリンの王菲のヒット曲、ジュリー・ドワロン、平井賢、などのカヴァーをすることもあった。He plays an electric using only 2 or 3 strings, which he delicately picks while quietly singing. I think he is better than anyone on drag city. One such marvellous song is sung and played accompanied only by the Do-re-mi-fa-so-ra-ti-do do-shi-ra-so-fa-mi-re-do scale. He is also partial to covering songs in foreign languages like Faye Wong’s hits in Mandarin, Julie Doiron, Hirai Ken, and so on.

春にはかれとオカメハチモクとで関西を回った。かれのペルソナは一言で言えば、ソノーラスな声のひびきの質にあると思う。In spring we toured Kansai together with perfect dancer. To sum up his persona in a few words, I would describe him as having a voice with a ringing-sonorous quality.

9.11以降、ブルース・スプリングスティーンやニールヤングやルーリードのようなアメリカ人が芝居がかった装置でさまざまな立場の人にどれだけ感情移入できるか、といったかれらの文明の最後の主題を求めているのに対し、カナダ人で移民のかれは最初から弱者の気持ちがわかる人間なのだ。Since 9/11, American artists like Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and Lou Reed, through their theatrical apparatus, have tried to evoke empathy between people of different stand points, confronted by the apparent end of their civilization. As an immigrant to Canada at the age of 10, Shiu understands the feelings of the underdog.

かれは工学が専門で9月からはまた大学に戻って今度はオランダに住むらしい。かれは城が好きでポルトガルでも日本でもあればかならず観光してくる。メルローが好きでライブ前にたくさん飲むのをみた。Shiu will be returning to University in Denmark to study the wind in September. He loves castles and if there is one in the vicinity, be it in Portugal or Japan, Shiu will be there. He also likes Merlot, and I have seen him drink a lot before a performance.

精力的で、静かだが打ち上げ花火のような、日本人には居ないタイプ、飛行機雲で絵を描くようなスケールの大きい中国のモダンアーティストたちの三国誌的な系譜に連なると思う。Possessed of a quiet dynamism which can turn on a sixpence like a firework; a type of person not found among Japanese; like an airplane painting pictures on a cloud, 　Shiu will join the ranks of great modern Sanguozhish Chinese artists.(tori)
